Before training begins

The clinician should first understand the child’s concerns, developmental history, current treatment, sleep, school functioning and family goals. Neurofeedback should be tied to a clear clinical question rather than offered as a generic brain-optimization package.

What the child wears

Small EEG sensors or an EEG cap are placed on the scalp to record brain activity. Preparation varies by system. The recording equipment is designed to measure activity; standard EEG neurofeedback does not electrically stimulate the brain.

What the child does during training

The child may watch a screen, listen to sounds or interact with simple visual feedback. The feedback changes according to selected EEG features. The aim is repeated practice and learning rather than consciously forcing the brain into a particular state.

How parents should judge progress

The most important outcomes are functional: attention at school, emotional regulation, sleep, task completion, frustration tolerance or other individualized goals. Clinicians should review these outcomes over time and adjust or discontinue training if it is not helping.

How to prepare for a session

Follow the clinic’s instructions about hair products, sleep, food, medication and arrival time. Bring relevant questions and describe any meaningful changes since the previous session. Consistency in reporting helps the clinician evaluate whether changes are actually generalizing beyond the training room.
